The Town of Ferriday declared a state of emergency at a special meeting Wednesday evening after a water plant pump failure.

The towns of Ferriday and Ridgecrest, which gets its water from Ferriday, are both under boil advisories.

Ferriday Mayor Rydell said the water plant is being shut down from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. to conserve water.

Part of the pump that went out in the Ferriday Water Plant is being rebuilt in South Carolina, and JCP officials are hoping to have it installed by Sunday.

Matt Parker of JCP said two men are going to get the part, which is the lower unit that goes under the pump on Friday, and if everything goes as planned, should be back Saturday.

According to Parker, the part will be taken to a machine shop and then lowered by crane into the unit.

Ferriday has five leaking fire hydrants, which will not be losing water during those hours.

Parker said a company from Tennessee which has offices in south Louisiana, will repair the fire hydrants the second week of July.

Additionally, a second pump not functioning properly will be repaired and serve as a back-up, according to Parker.

“It’s like we will have two new pumps,” Parker said.

Ridgecrest Mayor Veller Ray Carroll said he brought in a water buffalo that is stationed at the Ridgecrest water plant.

“We’re having to go along with what Ferriday is doing,” Carroll said.
